Response to "Refugees find no hiding place from Janjaweed"

This article, written in 2004, a year after the conflict in Darfur first began, mainly discusses the refugees living in the village of Riad. Riad is a popular "safe haven"--or as close as you'll come to one in Darfur under current conditions. Interviews with refugees depict the horrors they saw as their young sons were forced into huts doused with petrol, which were then sent up in flames by the murderous Janjaweed, as their husbands were shot, while their neighbors were raped. For these Darfurians, there is literally no hiding place. While those "lucky" enough to be in Riad receive the necessary nutrition provided by the United Nations World Food Supplier, they live in constant fear of being dragged from their huts and murdered for no reason at all. This article shows us exactly how quickly the murders in Darfur quickly became a full blown genocide--and how the rest of the world's silence has allowed it to fester simply by standing by.
